Education dream a reality

When Alabama natives John and Sara Davis moved to Hebron in 2000, they brought with them big dreams of starting a family and opening a Christian school in Northern Kentucky.
The family started pretty quickly - the couple has three boys age 6 and under - but the school took a little longer.
That dream didn't come to fruition until last month, when Cornerstone Classical Christian Academy opened Aug. 27.
After years of planning and paperwork, the Davises opened the new school with one teacher, four kindergartners and one second-grade student.
"It's been a really neat experience for my wife and I to see it all come to fruition," said John Davis. "The school has been in the works for a long time."
The non-denominational school, which is housed at Lakeside Christian Church, uses classical education methods based on a biblical world view.
Classical education is an approach that is rooted in the ancient medieval concept of the "trivium," according to John Davis, which is comprised of three basic tools of learning: grammar, the tool of knowledge; logic, the tool of reasoning; and rhetoric, the tool of communication and expression.
Early grades focus on grammar, middle grades on logic and high school students on rhetoric.
"The idea is that once you teach children how to think, they become life-long learners," John Davis said.
The school uses an integrated approach to subject matter, he said, that students build on throughout their lives. Students follow a set curriculum that includes Latin in the third grade.
As a member of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools, it's one of 187 similar schools across the nation.
"We feel like God called us (to Northern Kentucky) for a reason," said Sara Davis. "There's a need for a classical Christian school here."
The Davises have plans to expand the school by at least one grade each year. Ultimately, they hope to offer kindergarten through 12th grade.
For the past year, they've been hosting informational meetings for parents and visiting local churches.
"We're meeting people, receiving phone calls and finding families on the Internet that want something a little different for their children," Sara Davis said. "I think the school will definitely grow because everything about this method of education is so appealing - spiritually and academically - and it's hard to find a good combination of both in a school."
