Faith Matters

HEBRON - Can your third-grader learn Latin? Is the art of debating still taught in schools?

One Christian school opening this fall says yes to both.

Cornerstone Classical Christian Academy will host an open house Monday at Lakeside Christian Church to answer questions about this school concept.

The classical approach is designed to cater to natural child development, beginning with the first stage, grammar, for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

"Students are knowledge sponges at that age and they absorb facts and information," said John Davis, president of the board for the new school.

Grammar is not only for English, but other subjects as well. Students memorize and learn the rules and background of their subjects.

The middle school years are spent on logic, ordering information and facts, using critical thinking and questioning.

High school years are spent on rhetoric, learning the language of discourse in each subject.

"My vision, my goal is to teach with the grain, to follow how the children need to learn and prepare these students for a lifelong love of learning," said Taylor K. Kehl, the teacher for kindergarten through second grade - the only grades available at this time.

"The goal of the school is to prepare them not just for a profession, but to make a difference and to serve the Lord in this world," she said.

The school's learning philosophy applies to its religious studies as well. And faith plays an important role in other school topics.

"Sometimes there's a tendency not to appreciate your faith in a rigorous way, and we want to approach all subjects, including Christianity, with that determination," Davis said.

The school is a member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools. The group has 86 similar schools.

Ben Townsend, vice president of the board, has been active in starting the school. He hopes to have his children - 2½ years, and 10 months old - attend when they come of age.

"My background is in public schools, and I was blown away by classical education," Townsend said. "When I saw the education these students were receiving, I felt ripped off. I want my children to enjoy knowledge and have critical thinking skills. This will do that for them."

The open house is at 7 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Christian Church, 195 Buttermilk Pike, Lakeside Park. For more information about the school, visit www.cornerstoneclassical.org or call 859-760-5151.
